The LEAF-pilot
Together with Green Labs Netherlands and supported by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport we are running the Dutch pilot of the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF). LEAF is a self-assessment framework with which research groups in the laboratory sciences can increase the sustainability of their research practices and research environment.
The LEAF-pilot started in September 2021 with four biomedical public research organisations: Sanquin Research, Radboud UMC, Erasmus MC and The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology. In 2022 we extented the pilot now also including amongst others Twente University, Hubrecht Institute, University of Groningen.
In 2023 my own Leiden University will finally join LEAF as well which I will use as an opportunity for fieldwork in a chemical laboratory to understand how a more sustainable science is done in practice and how, when and why trying to do science more sustainably fails.
